Some games are good to play, and others are just, well, to waste some time. You don’t have time to waste, right? haha. If you do then this game is pretty good to waste time with. Good luck!

GAMES: Five Word Games for Cypris

01/21/2012 in Games, Word Games

The beginner or intermediate speaker often doesn’t get a chance to speak because advanced speakers are able to speak more freely. Here is a way to get everyone involved, play a word game. Here are a few examples with some tips on how to invite people to play with you.

The Alphabet Game

Make a word with the letter “A”. For example, “Apple”. The next person must say “Apple” and then a word that starts with “B”. For example, “Apple, …Banaana”. The next person then uses “C”. For example, “Apple, Banana, ….Cat”. Continue until you reach the letter “Z” This game takes some time to complete but it can be really fun.

I Spy

“I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with A”, and the other players have to guess what object you can see.Rez an image or use the holdeck to rez a scene. You can make rules like each person has three guesses, or the words have to be a noun, verb, or adjective. The winner chooses the next spy.

Picture Word Find

Rez a picture. Start with the letter “A” and try to make a word from the picture using the the letter “A” somewhere in the word. Then go on to “B” and so on. You can make this game easier with a picture that has a lot of objects (nouns) or actions (verbs). Adverbs and adjectives will be more difficult. You make the rules.

Buzz

This is a numbers game. The game starts with the first person saying “1″. The next person says “2″, next “3″, “4″, “5″, “6″, and then the person who is “7″ must say BUZZ. Then the direction reverses. Each time the circle reaches a “7″, and number ending in “7″ (17, 27), or a multiple of “7″ (14, 21, 28) the person must say BUZZ and the direction reverses. Be careful when you get to 27 and 28.

Coffee Pot

One person must teleport away from the areaor turn off their sound. The other members choose a simple verb like, “walk”, “run”, or “sleep”. They bring the person back to the group. The person can then ask yes or no questions to find out what the verb is. Substitute the verb with “coffee pot”. For example: The word is “sleep”.

  • Do we coffee pot everyday?
  • Yes
  • Do we coffee pot alone?
  • Yes
  • Do we coffee pot at night?
  • Yes
  • Is the verb “sleep”?
  • Yes

The person can ask as many questions as they would like but they have only three guesses before they must give up.

Tips to get people to play with you

  • When you are standing with some people, say, “Have you guys ever played ‘I Spy’?”
  • If you come to Cypris and there is no one there, open the group chat and say the same thing, “Have you guys ever played…”
  • Post a message on our Facebook group page or here on the website asking if we would like to play some word games. Choose a time, and then use the group chat to invite more people. Pretty soon you will have your own activity and plenty of people to talk to when it’s convenient for you! Have fun!

WORD GAMES: Puzzle Baron Logic Puzzles

09/05/2011 in Word Games

I’ve been a fan of Puzzle Baron for quite a while. I stop by to do a sudoku or cryptogram every so often. But the ones I really enjoy are the logic puzzles. I’m going to be bringing them back to Cypris Village in the near future but I wanted to show you them here.

What is a logic puzzle?

The image above is an example of a logic puzzle from http://www.logic-puzzles.org/pdf/G382ZK.pdf You can see there are three sections. The bottom section has some clues. You have to read the clues and figure out who makes each amount of money, which person has which phobia, and finally which designer do they like. Each person is different and no two people share the same item. Use the grid at the top to help you determine who has something or who doesn’t by putting an X or O in the boxes. When you think you know the answer, write the answer in the answer section on the middle right.

You can see thousands of puzzles on the the logic-puzzles.org website. And yes, you can see the answers too.

WORD GAME: One Big Chicken

05/26/2011 in Word Games

Ok, so this is actually a drinking game. But who says I can’t use it for English teaching. Of course, I would never tell my college students that their professor has played this…haha.

How to Play

There are 1o phrases. The first person says phrase #1. The second person says phrase #1 and #2. The third person says phrase #1, #2, #3 and so on until someone makes a mistake. Loser drinks…or has to do something stupid like clap their hands or go across the room and slap the wall with two hands 10 times. I thought ‘kiss the teacher’ would be good but my colleagues said I shouldn’t. Oh well.

Here are the phrases:

1. Big Chicken
2. Cute Ducks
3. Brown Bears
4. Hairy Running Hares
5. Fat Females Sitting, Sipping scotch and smoking cigarettes
6. Sheets Slit by Sam the Sheet Slitter
7. Sexy Siamese Sailors sailing the seven seas
8. Echoing egotists echoing egotistical ecstasies
9. Naughty Knocked up Nuns navigating the Nigerian desert toward the nunnery
10. Fig plucker’s plucking figs, I’m not a fig plucker or a fig plucker’s son but I’ll pluck figs until the fig plucking’s done!
